Sleepy Hollow’s Nutella Waffle with Fruit.

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking “Where can I get a waffle with chicken and salad greens on top of it in the middle of the Magic Kingdom?” well, your dreams have just been answered.  You can now get a waffle with Nutella, sweet and spicy chicken, or ham, prosciutto and Swiss cheese at Sleepy Hollow, the quick service counter on the right as you enter Liberty Square.   Since I’d just had lunch (with some Imagineers, you know the usual) and I was still a bit hungry (because one does not stuff one’s face while dining with Imagineers, especially good-looking ones), I decided to make a beeline over to Sleepy Hollow and try out the Nutella waffle.

The great thing about the Nutella waffle is that it’s covered in fruit so you can tell yourself that you’re being virtuous all while you’re digging through the berries and bananas to get to the chocolate goodness that is Nutella.  Not familiar with Nutella? It’s a chocolate and hazelnut spread, but the chocolate far outshines the hazelnut flavor.  At $5.59, it’s a pricey snack that doesn’t count as a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan, but it’s big enough for two or even three to share.

The waffle is your standard Belgian waffle. It could be a bit more tender but overall I had no complaints about the flavor. They give you a pretty generous serving of strawberries, raspberries, and bananas, about three-fourths of a cup. My only complaint would have to be the schmear of Nutella, which was on the thin side. A couple more tablespoons would have made it perfect.

This snack far outshines Sleepy Hollow’s signature funnel cake, so the addition of the Nutella waffle is a welcome one for a quick bite of something sweet on that side of the park. I’ll definitely try it again.

Disney World Quick Tips – Make a To-Do List

2011 09 18 21 51 36 270 300x169 Disney World Quick Tips Make a To Do List %tag

I make two to-do lists for my upcoming Disney World trips. One big one that I start months before (stop laughing) and a shorter one that I use in the last few days before we travel.  One thing I noticed though, was that I sometimes forgot to finish the last few things on the list, only to remember when I was about halfway down I-95 on my way to Disney World.

So a few years ago, I started a new tradition:  I tape the list to the back of the front door, that way I’m bound to look at it as I leave the house. In fact, I look at it several times as I’m going in and out packing the car.  I can’t tell you how much this has helped.  I keep a little highlighter nearby so I can cross off tasks I’ve completed.

It’s one of those little things that can make your trip a little easier and ensure that you’re not out at midnight looking for a charger for your phone.

Do you make a to do list?

Disney World Quick Tips: How to Add Plus Dining to FREE Quick Service Dining.

YASTEAK 1 998 300x135 Disney World Quick Tips: How to Add Plus Dining to FREE Quick Service Dining. %tag

When free dining came out on Monday, there was a little bit of confusion.  As you probably know, you can get free quick-service dining at the value resorts and free base dining at the moderate and deluxe resorts for stays from August 25 through September 29, 2012.

What you may not have known is that you can upgrade your dining plan to anything you want just by paying the difference between the quick-service plan and the next plan up. So if you’re staying at my beloved Pop Century Resortand you want the base plan, you’ll just pay an additional $16.55 per night for anyone ages 10 and up and just $3.03 for anyone ages 3 to 9.

Not a bad deal.

You can also upgrade from quick-service to the deluxe plan, so the promotion is quite flexible.   You’ll pay $33.98  per adult per night to upgrade from the quick-service to the deluxe dining plan and just $8.77  for kids ages 3 to 9.  The same goes for free base dining: You can upgrade to the deluxe plan as well just by paying the difference.

Bon appetit!

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t waste those Snack Credits.

2011 09 18 14 07 46 233 300x169 Disney World Quick Tips Dont waste those Snack Credits. %tag

The number one rule you should follow with Disney Dining Plan Snack Credits is this!

Don’t buy drinks with it.

It’s an easy mistake to make. You’re tired and hot and probably don’t think twice about handing the cast member your room key card, but that drink only costs around $2.59.  If you purchased the dining plan, you probably did so to save money, and this move just put you in the red, at least as far as snacks go.  You can use your snack credits to buy more expensive treats or even put together a small meal if you’re careful.

Make sure you don’t use your snack credits for anything that costs less than $3.  Instead, pay out of pocket for those items.  To maximize your value on the dining plan, your goal should be to purchase snacks at around the $4 range or slightly lower.

For example you can buy a side of chilli at Casey’s Corner in the Magic Kingdom or a delicious cupcake (that is so huge, you can split it) at Starring Rolls Cafe in Hollywood Studios for just one snack credit. (See picture above)  Healthy snacks like fruit, yogurt, and small milks are great choices for keeping your energy levels up, but they generally cost less than $2.  Consider buying those items at a grocery store off-site or Garden Grocer delivery service (see a list of stores and delivery services here).

Even if you don’t have a refrigerator, individual cartons of shelf stable milk can be a huge savings if your kids are like mine and drink a ton of milk. Which reminds me did you hear the news? All WDW Value Resorts will now have a Fridge

The dining plan just got more expensive for 2012, but you can still beat the cost and make it work in your favor. You’ll just need to think it out a little bit beforehand. Stay tuned for more tips on how to make the dining plan work.

Disney World Free Dining is Back!

cupcake2 300x290 Disney World Free Dining is Back! %tag

Here are the details:

  • Travel between August 25, 2012 – September 27, 2012
  • Offer is not valid for Campsites, Art of Animation or All-Star Music Family Suites
  • Minimum 2-day ticket
  • Minimum 3-night stay
  • Book this offer until May 18th
  • Free Plus Dining Plan for moderate and deluxe resorts
  • Free Quick Service Plan for value resorts

Details are just coming in and will likely be updated throughout the day.

Here are a few tips:

  • Remember, if you have an existing reservation and you meet the above criteria, you can add this promotion.
  • Treat this like it’s the only offer you’ll see for this time period. I know some people are waiting for annual passholder discounts or for room discounts (which often work better at the deluxe resorts), but we can’t predict if Disney will release those. Purchase this package now and change it later if something better comes out.
  • Phone lines will be extremely busy today. If you’re not booking a hard-to-get location such as a villa or Pop, wait until later today.
  • Can’t get the resort room you want? If you’re definitely going, book what fits your budget and then wait:  More rooms and categories usually show up on the second day of the promotion.

Best of luck!
