Doing Laundry vs Bringing a full suitcase

Have you flown lately? Airline baggage fees have become outrageous! You could drop anywhere between $15 to $70 (for oversize bags) PER bag.

At Walt Disney World there are a lot of supplies that you honestly need to bring with you in order to save a lot of money in the park. My Perfectly Packed WDW Packing List for 7 days could end up costing you quite a lot in baggage fees.

And what is the majority of weight in suitcases? CLOTHES!!

Did you know that all resorts on Disney property have their own laundry facilities? For approximately $4.00 (in quarters) you can wash and dry a load of laundry. So if you’re at Disney for 7 days and only bring three days worth of clothing for a family of four to wash you might only have to spend $8.00… and assuming that the dryer just doesn’t dry like it should (hey its possible) you might only have to spring for another $4.00. You’ll need some laundry soap too which is only $1.00 a box (and you could bring it with you easily).

Grand total to do two full loads of laundry, including double drying? I’d say about $16.00.

You could easily drop $50.00 EACH WAY in baggage fees. Which means doing laundry would save you about $84.00!!! I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather book another Character meal with that money then give it to the airlines.

You will need to plan some time to actually do the laundry on your trip, so make sure you put that into your schedule for the week!

I take the Purex 3-in-1 sheets with me on long vacations. They are easy to pack and light weight.

We normally stay for 10 days, pack for about 4-5 days worth each, so one suitcase each pretty much does it……..I bring a small bottle of detergent, and do laundry while we are there. It doesn’t cramp our style at all, I run it once we are back at the room for the night, early morning if peeps are still asleep or if the laundry facility is outside, I sit poolside while it’s running. Even if bag charges aren’t incentive, for me it’s having less to lug around the airport. I also put one or two folded sturdy bags in case we buy anything or if I need room for dirty laundry then use it as a carry on when we return.

For the past 16 years we have been using our DVC membership @ Old Key West. Most times we have a room w/washer and dryer. Since the airlines have been charging for check-in bags, we pack a carry-on w/three days of clothes (for seven people) then we throw a load of clothes in the wash when we get back to the resort at night then toss it in the dryer to dry during the nite. Next morning we can take the dry clothes out. This way it does not use up any of our ‘vacation’ time and we always have clean clothes to wear.

We’ve done laundry both times we’ve been at Disney, it’s right next to the pool, put your load in, go swim, put it in the dryer, get showered, take it out and you’re ready for what’s next. For about $10, we didn’t have to load down our trunk or have tons of laundry to do when we returned home. Also, we drive down and back, so for a week at Disney, it’s really 10 days or more! I don’t know about you, but I don’t have 10 days worth of clothing ready to wear all the time! A little bit of planning and the whole process is very easy. (As in, take the laundry down in a suitcase, then you already have something to take it back to your room in!)

It may save money, but when I’m on vacation, I’m NOT doing laundry. I’m not doing laundry, cooking or cleaning!!
