It looks like the new year is starting of well for for some Disney backed film projects. ScreenRant is reporting that both Maleficent and the untitled Matterhorn movies seem to have found a director.
Deadline has learned that Maleficent, which Angelina Jolie has long been attached to, is set to be helmed by Robert Stromberg. The Sleeping Beauty tale as seen through the villains eyes would be Strombergs directorial debut. He won back to back Oscars in Production design for Avatar and Alice in Wonderland and is currently working on Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful.
The still untitled Matterhorn movie will be brought to life by Brian Beletic according to Variety. This will be Beletic’s feature film debut. He is a commercial director and has also helmed several music videos. While not officially based on the ride the film is set to be an origin story about a young group of mountain climbers and adventurers. The studio has also brought in Brain Farm Cinema, who are the creators of the 3D snowboarding film “Art of Flight” to be production consultants.
I have been really interested in the Maleficent film since first hearing about it last year. I think seeing the film from the villain’s perspective will bring new life to the story. The film is being penned by Lisa Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Alice in Wonderland) so I have high hopes that it will not only be visually stunning but a great story as well. I think the untitled Matterhorn film is a great concept since its based on the attraction but is not a literal interpretation.
Neither film has a scheduled release date.
