Disney and Marvel have finally unleashed the final two volumes of the first season of ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’, and it was absolutely worth the wait. I jumped at the chance to review these latest two volumes of the Marvel produced Disney XD series, which is currently my favorite animated series on TV right now. The show is an adaption of the Marvel comics series, The Avengers, which follows the adventures of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and the Incredible Hulk as they stand toe to toe with the world’s biggest enemies to protect the world. Hit the jump for my full review.

This is easily the best Marvel animated series since ‘Spider-Man: The Animated Series’ from the mid 1990′s. Marvel and Disney have really taking their time to craft a truly great show for fans of the comics and new comers alike. These DVD’s contain the last thirteen episodes of season one, and they really saved the best for last in the second half of the season. In ‘Volume 3: Iron Man Unleashed’, the Avengers are finally faced with the Masters of Evil. But that’s not their biggest threat. My favorite arc in the series is the battle with Kang the Conqueror, who tries to go to war with the Avengers and over take them with a full blown alien invasion. It’s really a great story in the series, and it gives a chance for all the different characters to shine. Volume 3 also boasts a pretty cool special feature called ‘Avengers Unmasked: Masters of Evil’ which is an animated pop up feature that will play while you watch the episodes. It give you fun facts about the not only The Avengers and what you’re watching, but about the villains in the episodes as well. It’s a great way to get an information on you’re favorite characters that you may not have known before, and it’s definitely worth a look.

‘Volume 4: Thor’s Last Stand’ holds the last seven episodes of the series, which also features a great cliffhanger that you won’t see coming. These last seven episodes culminate in what had been building up over the entire stretch of the season. Loki has formed an army to overtake the earth and enslave humanity, so The Avengers must stand up against him and stop it form happening. But before they can do that, they must stop Ultron and his robot follows from destroying mankind. As with the last three volumes, Volume 4 also features another one of the pop up special features, this time called: ‘Avengers Unmasked: Hail Hydra!’. I really like these little pop up info tracks, because it really does give you some great tidbits of information on the characters that you may not know. Both seasons of the show are shown in their original widescreen aspect ratio, with a crisp and clear images that, I feel, are almost high-def quality. It also has a 5.1 surround sound mix, which will really work your sound system during the large scale battles the series features.

I have to say, ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’  season 1 really does have a great final episode, with a great twist you won’t see coming. As a fan of the comics, I was really excited to see them take that angle on the series, and I can’t wait to see where they go with it during season 2. I can’t recommend these two DVDs more, as well as the first two volumes of the series. It’s a great show for fans of the comics as well as new comers, and families are sure to love the further adventures of their favorite Marvel characters Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and The Incredible Hulk. Volume 3 and 4 of both of these series are on sale at a retailer near you, so check them out if you get a chance! And if you’re a fan of the series, keep a lookout for season 2 to be starting soon on Disney XD.
