The Eagle Award Ceremony Continues to Soar Higher
The African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida’s 2011 Eagle Award Ceremony lived up to its theme, “Soar Higher,” at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort.
The annual ceremony recognizes the achievements and leadership of local African American businesses and entrepreneurs, as well as the diversity initiatives of corporations and organizations.
Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Title Sponsor of the event, soared above and beyond the typical banquet. Sixteen African American chefs gathered from different areas across Walt Disney World to create a special culinary experience. The chefs recreated dishes that reminded them of their favorite meal growing up and represented their cultural roots.
“When I ask the chefs to develop food from their childhood memories you can see the pride that they display thru their creativity,” stated Jerry Kuchinskas, Catering Chef De Cuisine at Walt Disney World. “Their memories are transformed into one of the finest culinary events that I have ever hosted.”

Dayton Flyers Claim 2011 Old Spice Classic Championship at Disney
Kevin Dillard named tournament MVP; NBA notables visit ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for college hoops; 2012 field to feature Vanderbilt and Gonzaga
The Dayton Flyers defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers 86-70 to capture the 2011 Old Spice Classic championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort.
Dayton reached the championship after battling past Wake Forest on Thanksgiving and Fairfield in the second round of the annual Division I men’s basketball tournament. Minnesota topped DePaul and Indiana State before falling to Dayton in the title game.
The Flyers had five players in double figures, led by the Old Spice Classic Most Valuable Player, guard Kevin Dillard. Dillard recorded 19 points, 10 assists and career-highs with seven steals and three blocks against Minnesota. He was joined on the All-Tournament team by forward Trevor Mbakwe (Minnesota), guard Jake Odum (Indiana State), forward Cleveland Melvin (DePaul) and forward Rakim Sanders (Fairfield).
Dayton joins former Old Spice Classic champions Notre Dame (2010), Florida State (2009) Gonzaga (2008), North Carolina State (2007) and Arkansas (2006).
Orlando Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy was one of several NBA names to stop by for the holiday hoops tradition at Disney. Minnesota featured Ralph Sampson III, son of four-time NBA All-Star Ralph Sampson, and Austin Hollins, son of Memphis Grizzles coach Lionel Hollins, who cheered from the stands. Boston Celtics Coach Doc Rivers, legal guardian of Fairfield freshman Adam Jones, was also in attendance at HP Field House.
The 2012 Old Spice Classic field will feature Vanderbilt and Gonzaga, both preseason top 25 teams, along with Clemson, Davidson, Marist, Oklahoma, UTEP and West Virginia.
