If you were the Chairman of WD Parks & Resorts, what would you announce for the coming years? What would you be excited about in regards to what has already been announced? Would you start your Report with bad jokes?

Well, that’s what present Chairman Tom Staggs did as he delved into this Report. What follows are some highlights, along with a comment or two from yours truly:

Tom started with a lame FastPass joke before announcing that it has been a fantastic year. Then he showed a video montage of his first year as Chairman. I’m sure it was riveting!

Then came these statements:

  • The Parks are really well positioned to take advantage of the economic recovery
  • The substantial capital spent on the Parks will create value for investors
  • Guest Experience was identified as the key business for Parks & Resorts

Tom then identified four unique assets and competitive strengths that set Parks & Resorts apart. These are:

  • The Disney Brand
  • Intellectual Properties and creative talent
  • Technology and innovation

He then shared a famous quote from Walt Disney: “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.” He stated that Walt’s drive for innovation is still alive in the present Imagineers. I would have to agree with this as I see many exciting new attractions being built around the world, as well as the fantastic new features of the Disney Dream Cruise Ship. The forth asset mentioned was:

  • The incomparable Cast

Tom then stated that research had shown that people cite interactions with Cast Members ‘as the single biggest factor in their satisfaction and intent to return.’

Hopefully, this will lead to a better relationship between Disney and its Cast Members, with these hard working people getting their due!

Next, three initiatives were announced:

  • Growing established assets
  • Building new businesses
  • Expanding in geographic markets

Tom expanded on these three points by listing many of the Assets of the Disney Company and by outlining the plans for expansion.

He then touched on what has become a hot topic for Disney fans, that being the expanded FastPass initiative. Tom said: “…we are currently developing an innovative system that will, in essence, create a version of FastPass for their (Guests) entire Disney vacations.”

This involves reserving not only Resorts and restaurants, but also times for riding favorite attractions, Meet-and-Greets, plus seats at shows and spectaculars. It’s my view that this could take some of the Magic out of a spontaneous vacation experience, while edging out the common Theme Park attendee in favor of a newly-created elite class. Only time will tell if these initiatives are for the best.

Tom next discussed the Disney Cruise Line, DVC, and off-shore Parks. Most notably, Shanghai Disney. Here is what he had to say about that initiative: “We are well into our blue sky development, and once Shanghai opens in about five years, we know we will have a park that is distinctly Disney,
yet authentically Chinese. Taken as a whole, we believe China is the most exciting opportunity
we’ve had since Walt first bought land in Florida in 1964.”

Bold words. There was so much more to this report than I could include here! But one thing that came across again and again was that no matter what idea was coming, it was going to have this result:

“They (all of the ideas contained in the Report) are right for our brand and for our business, and they will help us create value for our shareholders for many, many years to come.”

I guess the only other question to ask is: Will they create value for the Disney Guest? If you have an opinion on this, please give it in the comment section. We at Chip and Co. would love to hear what you have to say!

Nordstrom and Disney Consumer Products (DCP) will celebrate the 45th anniversary of the beloved ‘it’s a small world’ attraction at Disneyland® park with a whimsical collection of stylish children’s apparel, accessories and footwear beginning today. The collection is inspired by world-renowned Disney artist Mary Blair‘s original mid-century artwork created for the attraction, and by Walt Disney’s belief that we are united in our love of children and our dreams of a better tomorrow.

(See below for photos)

Four seasonal collections for newborns, infants and toddlers will hit Nordstrom stores nationwide and nordstrom.com/smallworld throughout 2011, each delivery representing an individual country: ‘Japanese Spring’ launches the line on February 28, followed by ‘Indian Summer’ in June, ‘Scottish Fall’ for September, and ‘Russian Holiday’ in November. Each collection includes items priced from $18 – $169 from collaborators such as Petunia Pickle Bottom, TOMS Shoes, FEED, Trumpette, Baby Nay and Mighty Fine.

“When Disney shared Blair’s original artwork with us from its archives, we were excited about how well it would translate into quality merchandise,” said John Hunt, Nordstrom merchandise manager for infants and toddlers. “We hope our customers will love this art-driven collection as much as we do.”

In 1964, Walt Disney introduced a nine-minute boat ride— It’s a Small World – a Salute to UNICEF—dedicated to children around the world at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. In 1966, the attraction opened at Disneyland and today continues to carry guests past familiar miniature scenes of world’s monuments, animals, birds and children all singing and dancing to the unified tune of “it’s a small world.” Among all of Disney’s theme parks, there is not a moment of the day the song is not played.

“Our creative team here at Disney Consumer Products has always been inspired by the original Small World art and wanted to draw upon the magical story, prints and patterns, and diverse iconography to create this design-driven contemporary children’s collection that brings beauty, meaning and the legacy of ‘it’s a small world,’” said Robert Oberschelp, director, Disney Collections, DCP. “This collection is especially great for gift-giving and keepsakes as the story of Walt Disney’s ‘it’s a small world’ is truly timeless.”

To give back, Nordstrom and Disney are teaming with TOMS Shoes and FEED Projects to offer philanthropic pieces in the collection. TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need, while FEED Projects’ assortment will benefit UNICEF, which was the ride’s original 1964 beneficiary. Funds raised from the sales of FEED’s collection, ‘it’s a small world’ items will enable UNICEF to provide vitamin supplements to children in need. FEED Projects Co-Founder and CEO Lauren Bush will also make a special appearance to help promote the collection at Nordstrom at The Grove in Los Angeles on Wednesday, March 16 from 3:30- 5:00 p.m.

Customers can receive a collectable limited-edition lithograph of Mary Blair’s artwork each season with any purchase from the line (one per customer, while supply lasts). There will also be special Disney character artists drawing at Nordstrom Downtown Seattle on March 19, Nordstrom Pleasanton (Pleasanton, Calif.) on March 20, Nordstrom Oakbrook Center (Oakbrook, Ill.) on March 26 and Nordstrom NorthPark Center (Dallas) on March 27. Further information on in-store events is available at nordstrom.com/smallworld.

Holding off challengers virtually the entire race Sunday, Jennifer Hanley-Pinto of Jacksonville, Fla. survived long enough to cross the finish line first to win Disney’s 2011 Princess Half Marathon at Walt Disney World Resort.

Caitlin Latimer of Lexington, Ky. came in second with a time of 1:23:14, which was just 24 seconds behind Hanley-Pinto, whose winning time was 1:22:50. Heather Schulz of Orlando was third (1:25:01) despite running a faster time than last year when she finished second.

Yet as fast as the field was, no one could quite outrun Hanley-Pinto, 33. Latimer and Schulz stayed on her heels down the stretch but couldn’t overtake her as she finished ahead of a field of more than 17,000 runners. In all, more than 22,000 runners participated in endurance events throughout the weekend at Disney, including a health and fitness expo, a 5K and several kid races.

The weekend of events were all designed to celebrate and promote women’s empowerment, health and an active lifestyle. It’s widely regarded as one of the nation’s largest endurance race weekends geared towards women.

Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Weekend was the second of runDisney’s four signature events. The remaining two are the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend (September 2-4, 2011) and the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend (September 30-October 1, 2011) events.
