One of South Africa’s leading educators recently paid a special visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Animal Kingdom Lodge to share her inspirational story of perseverance and express gratitude for the ongoing support of several Central Floridians.

Eleven years ago, Nomusa Zikhali established the internationally-renowned Nkomo Primary School in rural South Africa with 60 children (ranging in age from five to 18) sitting beneath four trees. With nurturing over the years, the school grew beyond its humble beginnings into a campus of several buildings and classrooms serving more than 800 students. At least half of these children have lost their parents from HIV/AIDS and rely on the school for support.

Zikhali attributes part of the school’s success to the kindness and generosity of Disney and several Central Florida students and teachers. During the summer of 2009, Disney VoluntEARS traveled to South Africa along with several teachers from Palm Lake Elementary School to help with school improvement projects , curriculum enhancements and a hot meal program funded by  the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund.

Contributions from Palm Lake also included books, school uniforms, shoes and enough funding to build a water collection system to provide fresh water directly to the school. Prior to that improvement, students were required to walk several miles to haul water from the nearest river. As a result of the group’s hard work, Nkomo Primary School was recognized last year by the South Africa National Board of Education as the most beautiful school in the province.

During her Central Florida trip, Zikhali was pleasantly surprised with a $10,000 donation from Walt Disney World Resort to continue her school’s progress. The South African teacher hopes to use the money for two additional classrooms.

“The generosity of Palm Lake and Disney means the world to me and my student learners,” Zikhali said. “Our classrooms are so full; we are running out of room. This donation means our school can grow, hire more teachers and continue to provide for children that deserve the opportunity to learn.”

As part of her two-week visit, Zikhali also spent some time with students and teachers from Palm Lake Elementary School, volunteered at Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida and accompanied Disney’s animal care experts who visited children at the Florida Hospital for Children.

Enjoying Epcot as the guests of incoming Florida Governor-Elect Rick Scott, approximately a dozen Central Florida kids were treated to a memorable day on Dec. 27 filled with magical moments. The special visit was part of Scott’s Forging a Path to Prosperity Appreciation Tour, a seven-city tour of the state leading up to the inauguration in January.

The kids, ranging in age from 5-16, were all from Frontline Outreach, Orlando’s oldest outreach ministry to children focusing on urban early-childhood education and leadership development.

Upon arrival, Scott and the children were formally welcomed to the park during a special ceremony at Epcot’s Italy pavilion.

“When I think of Epcot and when I look out at these kids, I’m reminded of something Walt Disney once said, ‘All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them,’” said Dan Cockerell, vice president of Epcot. “Epcot is all about discovery – From thrill rides and attractions, to exhibits, entertainment, incredible food and treasures from around the world, there’s a lot of ground to cover and a lot of fun to have. It was an absolute thrill to welcome these children to our park.”

The kids had the chance to meet some of Disney’s most popular characters at a special meet-and-greet just for them.

Scott then joined the children for a ride on Epcot’s popular Soarin’ attraction. Lt. Governor-Elect Jennifer Carroll also treated some of the special guests to hot chocolate at the American Adventure pavilion.

Frontline Outreach provides quality afterschool activities for kids, including a “Read and Succeed” learning program, as well as recreational opportunities like swimming and basketball.

dwarfs Meet n Greet with All Seven Dwarfs

The greatest thing happened to my husband and me at this year’s Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. We got to meet ALL SEVEN DWARFS!!!

We really enjoy going to MVMCP each year. It is tradition that our first night at Walt Disney World is spent at the celebration. We love the decorations, the snow and certainly the hot cocoa. We also really enjoy being able to ride lots of rides because of the shorter lines.

Over the years we have had great experiences and we have taken advantage of many different meet-n-greet opportunities throughout the park.  But, we have never before had an opportunity to see all of the seven dwarfs together at one time. Not to even mention being able to take pictures with them.

Our kids got tired at around 11:00 and headed back to the Contemporary to relax. We hung on like the die-hard Disney troopers we are. We rode some more rides and walked around and did some shopping. When we rounded the corner by the skyway in Fantasyland, my husband said, “Oh my gosh – look!” and I turned swiftly to see a long line of people and these precious, sweet, smiling characters. I almost fell over myself trying to get to them.

For many years, my husband and I have been known as Dopey and Grumpy. We have Dopey and Grumpy collectibles and shirts and we are pretty true to character (me more than he, actually – as I am a lot more dopey than he is grumpy).

We were so excited to get these photographs we could not WAIT to show everyone. Our only regret was that the kids weren’t there for the picture; otherwise, that would have undoubtedly been our Christmas card picture this year.

What a special treat it was for us to have this wonderful opportunity this year. I sure hope Disney brings these guys back next year.
